RARE MID-LATE 19TH CENTURY AME RI CAN ANTIQUE LARGE, DECORATED, TWO- SIDED CHARCOAL BLACK & WHITE, GOLD GILT PAINTED, HAND CARVED & HAND PAINTED LONG WOODEN MERCANTILE SIGN, ONE SIDE:’PERRILL,’ OTHER SIDE:’E. [One butt end of sign previously slightly trimmed]. Early to mid 19th century Ame ri can hand painted mercantile wooden signage. 51 ¾” Length x 10″ Height. An amazing, now quite scarce, mid-late 19th century Ame ri can hand carved, gilded and hand painted New England mercantile wooden store sign, discovered recently in Concord, New Hampshire. It remains 100% untouched and as it was originally constituted. Only one side of the sign, perhaps to disguise some moisture damage or ensuing dry rot to the wood, was previously trimmed down just a tad, to remove this edge from view. This would have occurred on the’P’ side of the word’Perrill. The double-sided wooden sign features one side with the deeply carved three letter acronym’E. The deeply carved high case letters’E. Are gilded with real gold gilt sheeting. The’PERRILL’ sign side was completely hand painted with charcoal black and putty white. The’PERRILL’ side of the sign has a textured, sandpaper surface, where glass dust may have been used to dust the painted wooden surfaces, to create a reflective surface and to make the paint more resistant to fading over time, when exposed out-of-doors to the color depreciating effects of sunlight. Just pulled from an estate in the New Hampshire capital of Concord, NH. Ready to be hung and displayed once again in your home or office. Good to Very Good overall antique condition. One short side was ever so slightly trimmed down, to perhaps hide some dry rot and wood damage that may have occurred. This was previously done many, many years ago. We haven’t touched the sign and haven’t dusted, rinsed or otherwise altered it. It remains as it was found. The item “MID-19TH C AMERICAN ANTIQUE LG 2-SIDED B & WithGILT PNTD WOOD SIGN, PERRILL/E. F.
